The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and the Centre for Tropical Livestock Genetics and Health (CTLGH) have unveiled a groundbreaking real-time livestock monitoring application under the African Asian Dairy Genetics Gains (AADGG) Project. This innovation aims to boost livestock productivity while empowering smallholder farmers with enhanced management tools.
This app, designed for Android smartphones, introduces advanced features for recording livestock health, feed management, and artificial insemination data—capabilities previously unavailable with the commonly used Open Data Kit (ODK) system. Notably, it provides access to historical data for individual cows, a critical tool for informed decision-making.
The app replaces the simpler ODK system, which required tablets or laptops, was inaccessible to farmers, and made data retrieval cumbersome. By addressing these limitations, the AADGG-Dairy Data App promises to transform livestock management for smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia.
Enhancing Livestock Management
The AADGG-Dairy Data App enables users to register farms, farmers, and their livestock while recording essential data, including household information, health records, breeding history, and productivity metrics. These capabilities will strengthen efforts to identify high-yielding, adaptable dairy genetics suited to the needs of smallholder farmers.
The app has already been rolled out in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Nepal. Its user-friendly design ensures accessibility, and future updates will include translations into local languages to enhance usability further.

The app addresses critical challenges in agricultural data collection and usage. Smartphone adoption across regions like Kenya, with over 34.5 million users, ensures a solid foundation for integrating digital tools into farming practices.

Collaborative Innovation
Developed in partnership with Unmiti, a Hyderabad-based software firm, the app provides comprehensive data collection modules. These include features for recording herd health, breeding patterns, and farm economics, fostering sustainable farming practices.
Initial testing involved performance recording agents traveling to rural areas to gather data. Plans are underway to expand direct access to farmers, with translations into local languages simplifying adoption.
“Once we validate the data’s accuracy, the app will be rolled out to farmers. This approach will also reduce data collection costs, as farmers will directly input their information,” noted Raphael Mrode, ILRI Principal Scientist at CTLGH.
