Why Thailand is a global leader in medical and wellness tourism

With the rising demand for cost-effective, technologically advanced and high-quality medical care, medical tourism is at an all-time high, with destinations like Thailand topping the list. But over the past decade, the notion of healthcare has expanded far beyond its more traditional definition.

Maintaining optimal health involves more than consulting with a medical professional, it’s also about mental health, emotional wellbeing, and a holistic sense of vitality. Several key destinations throughout Thailand are designed to cater to this need.

Speaking to this is Ahman Mad-Adam, Director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand Dubai Office who says that medical wellness travellers choose Thailand not only for the treatments they need but for post-treatment recovery experiences.

“Returning to the pace of normal, everyday living after undergoing any kind of treatment can be quite a shock to the system. But spending recovery time in a traditional healthcare facility isn’t always what travellers envision as being the most therapeutic option.

What most travellers are after is something in between world-class medical treatment followed by a tailored recovery programme that allows the body and mind to rejuvenate at their own pace, facilitated by a trusted team of wellness practitioners,” he says.

Recent statistics put the number of medical tourists in Thailand at more than 2.5 million every year. One of its major drawcards is the high number of globally accredited hospitals, internationally trained medical professionals and positive health outcomes.

What’s more, is that major healthcare centres like Bangkok, where the majority of private hospitals and clinics are concentrated, also boast a number of wellness travel destinations that combine modern and traditional medicine.

The RAKxa Integrative Wellness Centre is a prime example. Based on a concept that integrates ancient Thai wisdom with the best of what contemporary medical science can offer, the centre specialises in personalised healing journeys rather than one-size-fits-all solutions.

Taking this approach is particularly important for travellers who have undergone treatment and need a programme that takes their specific recovery needs, any physical limitations and their emotional well-being into account.

Centres like these typically combine physical exercise and mobility regimes with diet and nutrition programmes that take place over a recommended period of time, giving travellers the time they need to recover fully and holistically.

For some travellers, a holistic wellness centre like RAKxa is the only stop needed during their stay. Travellers choose Thailand for several reasons, including a need to detox, destress, manage their weight, address hormonal imbalances, develop a better gut and immunity support or to improve their sleep hygiene.

The advantage of visiting one of these wellness hubs in Bangkok specifically is that well-known hospitals like the Bumrungrad International Hospital and the Samitivej Hospital are nearby and easily accessible, adding to a much-needed feeling of personal safety. Other cities that are considered wellness destinations in Thailand include Chiang Mai, Phuket and Koh Samui.

“Living up to our reputation of being one of the world’s top medical tourism destinations also ties into our objectives as a green tourism and sustainability destination. It’s about creating both a natural and built environment that is conducive to wellbeing and delivering exceptional care but is also committed to doing so responsibility and for the long-term. We’re excited to see how these aims continue to take shape as Thailand grows and evolves,” says Mad-Adam.
